A Day in Nara

A Day in Nara

Visiting the Kansai region in Japan would be a lot more fun with a day trip to Nara.

Nara is one of the famous tourist destinations in Japan. It is known as the city of free roaming deers and the oldest wooden structure in the world. Nara is just a one hour train ride from Osaka and Kyoto. What tourists usually do when visiting a city for the first time can be summed up in three words: food, history and scenery. This post will share some bits and tips when visiting Nara. Finding a furnished apartment in Japan is much easier with KaguAruoo! FOOD || One of the known traditional foods in Japan is mochi. And guess what? The best mochi in the country can be found in Nara. A famous mochi shop named Nakatanidou which is located in the heart of the city along Sanjo dori street, just a 4 minute walk from the Kintetsu-Nara Station and a 12-minute walk from JR Nara Station. This mochi shop is not only famous for its special yomoho mochi, the green rice cake filled with red azuki bean paste, but also because you can watch the makers do the entire process of making this special mochi. What’s more amazing is the owner, together with his staff, uses traditional pounding methods to make their rice cake the smoother and stickiest mochi in town. A mochi costs around 130 yen and you can enjoy it fresh from this shop.

HISTORY || Before Tokyo and Kyoto became Japan’s capital city, Nara was the first capital around 710, whose former name was Heijo. Because of this, the city is rich with Japan’s history along with the oldest and grandest wooden Buddhist temples. Walking further down the Sanjo dori street from Nakatanidou is the Kofuku-ji complex, and across the Kofuku-ji complex is Nara Park, where you can mostly find the deers strolling and sleeping everywhere. Walking along the sidewalk of the park, you can find locals selling shika senbei, or deer biscuits. It costs around 100 yen to 200 yen and you can enjoy feeding the deers. Going up from Nara Park is the famous Todaiji Temple, which is still the world’s largest wooden building. It holds the largest bronze statue of Buddha in Japan with a height of around 15 meters. The Todaiji Temple also has this huge wooden gate named Nandaimon, guarded by two huge wooden statues at both sides. You can only see them if you stand within the gate.

SCENERY || With Nara’s rich history, tourists, history enthusiasts and polymaths are everywhere. Little known are hidden gems tucked in corners of Nara and one of these hidden gems is the Daijoin Temple Garden and Cultural Hall. Located one street away from Nara Hotel, this secluded garden is a safe haven for those looking for a place to reconnect with nature. They have an entrance fee for 100 yen and if you are lucky enough to be the only one strolling around the area, you can achieve solitude with the garden all to yourself.
