Hondoji Temple is a popular tourist destination in Matsudo, famous for viewing Japanese hydrangeas. The temple grounds have about 10 kinds of hydrangeas and more than 50,000 Japanese hydrangeas grow during its season. You can also see large pine and cedar trees by the entrance of the temple which makes the entry look like a green tunnel. Passing through the Niomon Gate, there is a long staircase that leads to the ground where you can see shrubs of different Japanese hydrangeas just before reaching the main building of the temple.
Forest and Park for the 21st Century
In Sendabori, Matsudo in Chiba Prefecture, you can find Forest and Park for the 21st Century, a wide mutual park on a mountain whose goal is to respect nature while interacting with people. The park utilizes various elements to the greatest extent possible, such as grasslands, wetlands, ponds, and cultivated fields. The park is so huge that you can see different types of plants and flowers no matter what season it is. In summer, you can enjoy the view of the vibrant sunflowers. You can also see cosmos and other seasonal flowers during autumn. Because of its wide area, many pop culture events like cosplays and concerts are held in the Forest and Park for the 21st Century.
Tojo House is a modest-sized mansion owned by the late Akitake Tokugawa, a shogun from the Edo Period. The house has an overlooking view of the Edo River. It is also known as one of the 100 Kanto area viewing spots of Mt. Fuji. The house landscape it features is unique Tojo and its lawn is inspired by European models which are the first of their kind in Japan. It also has a spectacular garden with lush green grasses and various flowers. Near the house is a history museum where you can drop by after your visit to Tojo House.
