Kyoto is popular for its panoramic views, pleasant weather and sacred temples. One of the known temples here that has awed millions of travelers is the Fushimi Inari Taisha.

Located at the southern part of Kyoto, this important Shinto shrine doesn’t just entertain people with thousand vermilion torii shrine gates and beautiful shrines. It plays an important role in understanding Japanese religion, beliefs and faith. The shrine is dedicated for the god of agriculture and business, Inari. The structure is built on the foot of the sacred Mt. Inari, The torii gates entrance on the other hand can be found at the back side of the shrine. These torii gates were donations from individuals and companies that has reached their success through the divine intervention of the Shinto god, Inari. Each gate would cost not less than 400,000 yen for smaller ones and would cost up to a million and more for the large gates.   Carved on each gate are the names of the donors. There are also a lot of miniature gates as you go along the path which are donated by tourists and locals which can’t afford the costly price of the life sized torii gates. You can also can’t miss the foxes you see on the shrine. These fox statues are believed to be messengers of the god Inari. It’s quite mesmerizing to stroll around and count all the fox statues you see each one looking different from the other.

From the base of the shrine, one can enjoy the torii gates, and just a slight walk up to the mountain, you can reach the mid-way shrine, where you can write a wish unto a votive tablet locally known as Ema. The ema in this shrine is unique as you can draw your own face of the fox on it. It is a vivid sight to see the different faces drawn on each ema. Japanese are also believers of amulets and lucky charms. You can see various of these kind being sold in the shrine. Buy one for protection, luck and even good health. Here in Fushimi Inari, Omamori featuring the foxes are sold as key chains or small cards that can fit into your wallet and pouches. Aside from these cute souvenirs to take home, you may also purchase rice crackers shaped like foxes here.

From the mid-way shrine, pass the two-storied romon gate, you will reach the main shrine. It is here where one pays respect by offering up some coins, ringing the bells and praying. One may bow twice, clap twice and pray silently and does it over again. This is truly a very serene and solemn place, so be mindful to turn your mobile phones off and avoid chitchats among your friends. Focus on praying and lifting up your dreams and aspirations to the god Inari. Taking photos are prohibited in this area of the shrine.

Religion is an important aspect in the life of a Japanese. Every birth, marriage and death, religious practices are strictly followed. To be able to experience the way Japanese proclaims their faith, all you need to do is to visit a temple or two.
