Searching for a light snack to indulge in? Our attention was focused on the fluffy, soft textured and creamy cheesecake. Japanese cheesecake is famous for being Yakitate (or freshly baked). Pumped with the goodness of cheese, this delightful cake goes well with wine for lunch or dinner.  Or simply enjoy it on its own.  There are some restaurants in Osaka that serve seasonal menus for different varieties of cheesecakes.

One all time favorite of Japanese and perhaps people in Asia, is ramen. Composed of noodles, skillfully created from wheat, served in a sumptuous broth that brings each ramen its distinct flavor and taste. Ramen is also topped with different kinds of toppings, may it be meat slices, seafood selection, seaweeds and vegetables. Oozing with the goodness when these three staples are combined, let’s wait whose mouth will be the first to bite.

If you are fond in searching for the best street foods in Japan, you can count Osaka in the top list. Being first on the list of savory street food is Kushikatsu. Kushi refers to bamboo skewers and katsu refers to fried meat slices. Meat, seafood and vegetables evenly cut in bite sizes, carefully battered in secret fusion of herbs and spices and deep fried to perfection. Enjoy it steaming hot with beer or drinks of your choice.

Another popular street food I would like to mention is the Takoyaki. These are octopus-filled balls, that when eaten produces a distinct feeling of eagerness to try another ball… then another one…. Until you have eaten the entire box! People just can’t get enough of Takoyaki. These delicious balls are made from wheat flour based batter, seasoned with secret herbs and spices, filled up with a slice of octopus, ginger and green onions. For the finishing touches, a dash of bonito flakes, dake tare sauce and mayonnaise.

You can count the sweet stuff to invade street food carts! Introducing Mitasashi Dango, a Japanese style dumpling and sweets made from rice flour glazed with sweet sauce. Botchan Dango has never gone out of style with its sweet flavor and enticing colors of green, yellow and brown from adzuki beans, egg and matcha for natural coloring. If you wish to tempt your sweet tooth even more, try the Taiko-Manju. It’s a sweets famously known throughout Japan especially during festivals. It’s a batter mixture of bean paste filled with different kinds of fillings such as custard, fruit jams, curry and even meat.

A comfort food enjoyed by Japanese during winter, a dish consisting of various ingredients like boiled eggs, radish (daikon), fishcake stews dipped in a light soy-flavored broth. There’s nothing more fulfilling that biting on an Oden with sake on a chilling day. No one will stop you from enjoying Oden on any regular day.

The best is yet to come. This mouth watering grilled Japanese pancake  is incomparable. You’ll never get enough of its flaky, unique and grilled to perfection taste. The name of the dish is derived from the word “Okono” which means how you like and “Yaki” which means cook, all together, it means how you like it cooked. You can customize the ingredients you want to add on your Okonomiyaki and even instruct the chef to cook it at your desired preference.
